To much cardio?

I am 5'10 225 pds i am trying to loose weight. I go to the gym mon-fri mornings for 2 hours. I have been doing 1 hour cardio,1 hour mainly Calisthenics. Is 1 hour cardio to much? Should i be doing weights more?

You loose weight in the kitchen, not in the gym. Exercise is to improve your overall health. Honestly, two hours is too much in my opinion. I would cut it down to 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of Calisthenics.

Cardio & strength training each have their own health/fitness benefits. So for all around fitness - you should do both.

Strength training can help you retain more existing lean muscle mass while losing weight, so it's important to me.

Some people do shorter stints of cardio than 1 hour but I typically do 40-45 minutes each day. Although, the longer you go, the more likely you'll end up burning muscle. The body chooses to break down proteins first before going after fats and if you don't have enough protein in your blood to support the energy burn once you deplete your quick energy stores, it'll start to attack your muscle for energy. I would cut back a little on the cardio, depending on what your end goal is, and focus on more strength training. It's hard to tell how effective your strength training regimen is because 1 hour of calisthenics varies in intensity from person to person. One hour may be good for you, maybe more or maybe less. However, you're not going to grow muscle doing calisthenics as you need a progressively heavy lifting program to do that. Your body weight may work for a short period but becomes much less affective at growing or retaining muscle the stronger you get and the lighter you become. At some point, you'll have to look at getting into a serious weight bearing program or join a gym.

I spent about 45-60 minutes on cardio 5-6 days a week. Last week was 5 but most are 6 days. Strength can be anywhere from 30-60 minutes so I also spend about 2 hours in the gym some days.

I have just increased to 60 minutes on cardio when I started I walked the treadmill 30 minutes. Then would go for 45 minutes. Eventually I wanted to see if I could do 3 miles because I was reaching two. So most nights I have been walking 3 miles. Now I will continue to work at decreasing the time it takes me to walk those 3 miles as I lose more before I take on jogging intervals. For the record I think 30 minutes is enough I just am working on personal goals of 50 miles a month of walking.

I did 9 hours of cardio yesterday - certainly feels like too much today. :)

No-one can answer your question without knowing your goals and capabilities.
If it's simply to lose weight then that comes from a calorie deficit and not any particular exercise or duration of exercise.

If you aren't suffering overuse or other injury due to your workload, it's not too much. Do what you can handle. It's up to you to find that balance. Everyone is different. I mix cardio with strength but the first 30 minutes or so is mostly cardio (heavy bag). As alluded to previously, if you aren't paying attention to what you are eating, it may not matter so be sure and make it all work together.

The question of "too much" depends on your goals. If your main goal is to lose weight then cardio is your friend as, typically, you'll burn more calories in a given amount of time with cardio. But, as others have pointed out, weight loss happens in the kitchen......you can't outrun your fork.

My main concern would be that putting in 2hrs a day with no recovery days in between may actually hamper your progress and lead to burnout.

My only concern is that going for 2 hours at a time 5 days a week will get old fast and eventually you'll quit due to burn out. But if you absolutely love it and look forward to it then go for it. However, I will second what Wilsoncl6 said about progressive weight lifting.

Not to pile on but...Loose weight is the weight you want to lose.
