Part-Time Vegetarian

Before my fiance and I met, I was a vegetarian and he was a vegan. Three years and two kids later, we were living the Great American Fast Food Diet and both upwards 30lbs heavier. My fiance's psoriasis became debilitating, with enormous sores on the bottom of his feet and an ache in his joints that made it impossible for him to go to work on some days, and he was considered pre-diabetic. My kidney disease cause me to throw up and have migraines, brought on by my new high protein, high salt diet. Our doctor straight out told us that we needed to go back to what our bodies had clearly done better on: being vegetarian.
We tried to get back on the wagon, but being vegetarian/vegan means either time or money, neither of which we had much of with two small toddlers in the house. One Saturday, after passing a taco bell (our family's favorite) and gazing lovingly at the drive-thru from afar, my fiance turned the car around and got in the line. "It's the weekend. We deserve a little treat." he declared.
It became the norm. We would stick to our diet, vegetarian and calorie restricted, until Saturday and Sunday. The idea was that we would stair step back into being completely vegetarian after a few weeks of weening ourselves, however, we have not seen the need. Any time I want a burger on a Wednesday, I just say to myself "you can wait until the weekend" and I avoid all those calories and animal protein.
It may still feel like cheating, but that's the best part! On the weekend I get my chicken nuggets and beef tacos and feel delightfully naughty about it.
It keeps me from cheating during the week, so I get 5 solid days a week of eating right and working out. And it has been effective too! I've lost 16lbs so far!

The term is flexitarian but if it works for you and your family go for it, but any major diet changes can cause issues.0
