1. Don't do it.
2. Eat 1000 calories less than you burn every day, and move if you can.
3. Be kind to yourself.3 -
I would do some research about it and talk to people that actually had it done so they themselves can give you an idea what to expect , good luck to you if you get this procedure done.0

It's a very personal decision to choose major abdominal surgery, over every single other option out there. Make sure you research every last alternative option. The thing that strikes me is, according to your profile, you're 18 years old. That is so young - and this surgery will affect you for the rest of your life. The fact that you are even on this forum means (I think) that you are looking at calorie controlled dieting as an option. Honestly, unless there is a compelling medical reason why you can't lose weight through diet and exercise, bariatric surgery should be the very final option after all others have been exhausted.
At 18 years old, you are younger than a great deal of people who decide to get their life and body sorted out - for many, it takes a very long time for that realisation to sink in. The good news is that you've clearly already discovered this. The even better news is that at your age, weight loss (whilst not easy at any age) is great deal more reachable for a young body, if you're free of any pre-existing conditions. You have to work just as hard as everyone else, but the advantages of teenage skin having far more elasticity can mean weight loss side effects like loose skin are reduced. Your 18 year old body, whilst currently obese, still has an 18 year old heart, lungs and muscles. That means you have greater capacity of things like cellular regeneration, blood flow and lung capacity, if and when you choose to add exercise to your routine, and you'll get stronger a lot quicker than someone 20-30 years older than you.
If you want my opinion - without any sugar coating! - bariatric surgery is an option far too quickly reached, both by patients and some medical professionals. IMO, it's touted as a 'quick-fix' solution that is nothing of the sort. Unless the root causes of the overeating are dealt with, it is not treating the habits and emotional/psychological reasons for their obesity. The side effects of bariatric surgery are wide-ranging, debilitating and sometimes pretty dangerous. I'd urge you to reconsider, and perhaps delay any progress on the surgery for some time. If you're willing to work hard, count calories and get a healthier body without surgery, that should be your decision.5 -
I had the gastric bypass in 2001. If I had to do it again, I don't know if I would. I had to lose the weight so the doctor would fix my knees so I could be out of pain. For me I lost 70 pounds. I went from 292 to 220. My brother had it also. he started at 450 and got down to 240. We both almost died. Both of my lungs collapsed and I spent 9 days in ICU. He spent a month in the hospital when he sprung a leak. We are both way out from surgery and have experienced regain. I reached my highest weight of 317 pounds, managed to get down to 220 and regained back to 280 and am currently starting over at 265. It is not a piece of cake. You still have the head hunger. It is hard when you want to eat something but your stomach won't let you but your body craves it. I learned to eat around the surgery by grazing also I hadn't gotten rid of my bad habits. I have the pouch but guess what I am still dieting.
I also ended up with chronic ulcers, bad teeth from vomiting, and other problems with my esophagus.
If you do decide to go through it I hope you have counselling, concentrate on protein first even though for me I can barely tolerate most meats, drink your water, and go to the support meetings.1
