I don't understand

Just returned from a 10 day cruise where I ate anything I wanted (yes, in large amounts), I drank more alcohol than normal, did very little exercise (bit of walking). When I stepped on the scale this morning, I was down almost 6 pounds. I expected to have gained 6 pounds!

What gives? Any ideas?

Weight loss isn't linear. You don't necessarily get the weight you deserve on the day (or week) that you earned it. :)

Sometimes when one has been on a diet for a long long time, influx of foods for a period of the time let's the body adjust to calories available to burn. Same thing happens when people eat too little and stall a lot in their weight loss.
The body is amazing at how it utilizes calories based on stimuli. So kind of think like how a dam works.
If it's raining a lot, and the reservoir fills up continually, and the output equals what's coming in, the dam doesn't overfill. If there's a drought, the valves are closed to reserve water in the dam. Refill that dam back up, the valves are reopened to avoid overflow. And of course, if the valves stay closed and it keeps raining, overfill of the dam happens (weight gain).
