I gained 60 in my second pregnancy but was still breastfeeding my first baby. 13 m a part. My daughter a PhD in nutrition specializing in infant/woman nutrition she says...there is a whole new way to look at it. (26 lbs a pregnancy is not the healthy weight gain anymore) I trust her and her associates. Don't worry about it.

Don't lose weight while you are pregnant.

Talk to your doctor about it at your next prenatal visit. He/she can refer you to a dietician who can provide guidance about how much to gain, whether or not you can safely lose, meal plans, etc. Pregnancy is an important time, nutritionally, so you will want to tread lightly and listen to your health care team.

    Congrats and good luck!

Congrats on your pregnancy! Have you found the Fit, Fabulous, and Pregnant group yet?

At your first appointment with your provider, talk to them about what is a healthy goal for you during this pregnancy. Remember, you are growing a human! It's not about just getting your baby off to a good start, but if you deprive yourself of calories/nutrients, the baby will take what it needs from you, and that can leave you in a bad spot later. 40lbs overweight is not heavy enough that any medical professional would recommend that you attempt to lose weight during pregnancy. You're weight gain is currently recommended between 10 and 20lbs.

I'm 20 weeks with baby #3. I started this pregnancy about 40lbs over weight myself, and have gained 7lbs so far. I'm quite happy with this, as is my doctor. I eat maintenance level calories, and try to be active for 45-60 minutes every day. I've been overweight every pregnancy, but with my doctors help gained a healthy amount for me and baby, and had lost all of that by my 6 week check up with the help of breast feeding.

You're in the first trimester, where you're expected to lose a little weight any way due to food aversions and morning sickness. Try and eat as healthily as you can, move when you feel up to it. Most importantly just try to enjoy this time. How many times in your life are you going to be pregnant?

You need to talk to your doctor about this.
I know several women who lost weight while pregnant and the doctors weren't concerned.
