Are you following any particular program?
Oh, and I wouldn't suggest doing anything to normally leave the gym sore.0 -

Soreness doesn't equal effectiveness.

In that case, no, you're not doing it right.
Get on a tried and true beginner's lifting program, such as StrongLifts, Starting Strength, or All-Pro's Beginner. Follow the program you choose. Don't modify it unless you need to due to previous injury or available equipment - no matter what you think, you don't know better. And if you do have to modify it, ensure you're substituting something that's adequately comparable.1 -

He was being sarcastic. You're essentially wasting your time if you're not on a structured lifting program based on your goals that's been drawn up by an actual trainer. Along with a structured diet once again falling in line with your current goals. You don't need to be sore to make progress, but you do need to be on a program that allows for progression.
