Overboard on Watermelon?!

just discovered I eat several hundred calories of watermelon as a snack. For reference, my grandfather farmed watermelons - the real kind, that are 2 feet long with seeds, not the little round seedless ones. We grew up splitting one of those 4 ways. Considered it a healthy snack. Weighted out a portion today...talk about overdoing a "healthy" food. Now I know why it's usually served in pizza size slices. Sad discovery.

This is why counting all calories is important!

A couple of weeks ago ate an entire big seedless watermelon over the course of a week. 2-400 grams at a time. I found it tasty and satisfying and it fit very well in my food/calorie budget.

*my calorie goal is pretty big though.

i literally can't live without watermelon. when I'm dehydrated i crave it like crazy. you can scale it back to make it fit, but i don't see anything wrong with it.

At least several hundred calories of watermelon is as filling as a thousand calories worth of fries.
Yes. You'd have to eat about three pounds of watermelon to get the calories in a large McDonald's fry. The watermelon will give you more nutrients. There are many worse things to eat to lose weight.

Mmmm.. Watermelon... I get at least one per week during the summer. And I happily eat it all (unless my wife eats it before me :# ). The biggest issue I have is not how much I eat.. It is finding the perfect melon. I have become very good at it. :)

Did you weigh only the edible portion?

I'm confused. Watermelon is fairly low in calories. 100g is only 30 calories. I ate a pound of watermelon and it's 136 calories.

Seriously water melon is what worries you? Its nothing but water and must be eaten cold and in LARGE quantities lol. Ditto cucumbers :) Now combine them chunks of watermelon and cucumber with some mint and feta in a huge bowl with a splash of aged balsamic and call it heaven :)

    Yummy!

F that. If I am going to eat watermelon, I am going to eat a lot of it. One quarter of a big one? Yep, that sounds about right. It's never made me fat, it's so diuretic it doesn't even cause a temporary bounce, and is filling so you eat less after. Just stay aware and adjust other stuff, watermelon season is short. I love watermelon. Lots of it.

I love watermelon too. I ate 250 grams for 75 calories last night and will eat 200 something more at lunch today. That's not that many calories for a big bowl of melon.

    It'll make you pee.

I was a leader once at a camp in Romania. There was a watermelon growing in the camp garden. Amazingly, none of the kids swiped it, and one day between camp groups me and a couple of the other leaders decided its time was up. We ate it between the 3 of us.

I peed. A lot. But it tasted so good!

one of my dogs... accurately named shark goes insane for watermelon and rinds. she actually goes insane for anything that would slightly resemble edible.

According to my siblings, before I was born, my parents bought a watermelon from some car trunk vendor on the way to the beach. Everyone ended up with a horrible diarrhea and vomit episode.

The main thing I look for is a flat and discolored (yellowish) spot. This means the melon was allowed to ripen in the field. No flat spot, it was picked early and will not be as good. The 2nd thing I look for are brownish looking streaks or spider like marks. I am not exactly sure what they are but i found that their presence usually means a sweet melon.

I have always heard that tapping on the melon will give you a good idea how it will be. I have never had any luck with this method. Also there is something with the stem that indicates if it was picked too early. Again, no luck with this but YMMV.

Now I think I will go eat the last piece of watermelon in the fridge. :)

Mmmmmmm. Watermelon. There was a few weeks there recovering from Bariatric surgery where I had to have my watermelon every day.

I was in love with anything wet and cool for a while there because no liquids the day after surgery. And that small stomach afterwards can't guzzle water any more. It's sip all day or be parched.

    So. Watermelon. Yes.

I would have it with a little Greek yogurt for my protein.

There's not enough calories in watermelon to worry about. I'm eating a ton of it this summer but the last few have been bad so I've had to taper off. I lost enough water weight from eating the first couple that I came out on the good side! I'm waiting for the homegrown ones to start selling here now. I can't wait!!!

I love watermelon but it's so freaking messy I rarely buy one. And you never know for sure how good it'll be.
