How do I safely get out of Ketosis?

Hello,

I'd be increasing my calories now- only got last 10 lbs to drop before I'd be labelled "ripped" but I was doing ketogenic diet for past 17 days and I was on hyper low calories as well 1500.

Now I'm thinking of bumping them up by 100 a day to 1600 which I can do by adding another tbsp of peanut butter.
How do I go by adding minimum water weight by getting out safely?

Also I never got keto flu or fever or any other symptoms - does that mean I was never in ketosis?

I'm not sure why you would want to get out of ketosis; it's better for your body than relying on carbs for energy. For more reliable information, you can go to ketogains.com, or search for ketogains on facebook and join the group.

Eat carbs to get out of ketosis. Increasing your carbs and your calories both are going to cause water weight gain - there's no getting around that.

And no, feeling sick is not needed for ketosis. The launch pad in the LCD group has more info if you're interested.

After only 17 days you most like are not fat adapted.

I go in and out of ketosis daily now after being full time in ketosis for nearly two years. That is due to eating more than 50 grams of whole food carb sources daily. That is because I am doing my own version of Haylie Pomroy book The Fast Metabolism Diet: Eat More Food and Lose More Weight way of eating. In short it is 2 days high carb, 2 days of high protein and three days of low carb high fat way of eating. It is fun plus I am losing pounds again after being at 200 for the past year.

Humans are Flex Fuel machines and can run on glucose/ketones as needed as long as we are getting enough protein and fats.

There is no safety issues that I know about other than for totally insulin dependent diabetes.

It's been years since I read the Atkins book, but if memory serves me right, add carbs back in gradually. Do your next week at 40 g carbs, the week after at 60 etc etc.
Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

This is what I wanted to avoid, I knew it was going to happen but wanted to make sure it was as little as possible.

Dropped 10lbs in last 17 days , you don't think that's due to high fat low carb diet?
Also, my carbs were always less than 50 and more than 30g a day. I just couldn't get them any lower.

For another last 10lbs I will continue high fat diet but I'm raising my calories to 1600-1800 -so I can do proper workouts.

Even in general I'll try to have high fat oriented diet and won't be scared of the word "fat" like I used to be lol

If you start eating more carbs, you're going to regain water weight. There's no way around it. When you're following keto, your glycogen stores are depleted. Eating carbs will replenish those stores, and each glycogen molecule has water molecules with it, so water weight gain.

Just be prepared to see some of the weight come back. It's not a regain of fat, but rather a regain of glycogen and water that you lost during your first week of keto.

Stupid question, but aren't you trying to lose water weight in a last push before a contest? It seems like LCHF is working for that; why change horses midstream?

I expect your weight loss is due to eating LCHF for sure and half or more of the 10 pounds was from water loss if you just started to eat LCHF three weeks ago. I have lost 10 pounds in the last 18 days by replacing some of my fats with whole food carbs that means I am only in a start of nutritional ketosis part time now. The Fast Metabolism Diet by Haylie Pomroy that I think you mentioned before or it could have been someone else is the best book out of many that I have read about using food for medicine. In short she states we need to lower our fat intake some days and train the body to use some of our stored fat for energy for a 28 day time period while eating more calories than most diets recommend. The short article below is an overview of the book.

Yes I agree with @auddii that you may want to stay LCHF until the meet/contest date to keep off the water weight until that date. Best of success.

Others keep in mind Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) way of eating is NOT a weight loss program but a way to help reverse major health issues like prediabetic, type 2 diabetes and many other diseases. Weight loss was just a side effect of recovering health in my case and not due to eating low calorie. In fact I did not lose even ONE pound during the first six weeks of eating LCHF but I lost inches of fat that first six weeks. It was 6 months before my 40 years of serious IBS symptoms fully resolved. My pain dropped from 7-8 levels to 2-3 pain levels in just 30 days after I left sugar and all grains in my case. I have maintain my 50 pound loss which dropped me to 200 pounds for a year now eating 2500 calories daily of LCHF foods.

Yes it will be stupid doing it right now.

I was also on hypo caloric diet. 1500 a day which I would like to bump up to 1800 or so I can start working out like a normal person again. Right now the lifts are mediocre at best.

I read horror stories about people ballooning up after contests so I want to avoid that. Someone also suggested me that I should go on maintenance calories for 2 weeks. Is that okay? I just don't want unnecessary fat

I don't mind water weight that much because I can drop it in two sessions of boxing. I would have to come back into deficit because I'm still not at ideal body fat percentage.

Increase calories and carbs slowly to keep bloating to a minimum. Look into the concept of "reverse dieting" or "reversing it of a cut" for ideas and suggestions.

The poster made a bold claim without backing it up. That's why citation is needed
