It depends. How far overweight are you? 0.5 kg/week is realistic for most people who are above 10 kg overweight. .25kg/wk is realistic for most people less than 5 kg overweight. If you're just getting started, it will help if you gently ease yourself into a modest calorie deficit with foods and quantities that you are comfortable with. Indeed, you might as well get comfortable because we're teaching you a life change, not a diet plan.

Depends on how much you want to lose. I want to lose roughly 50lbs but i'll settle for 40lbs and i've set my goal to 0.75kg (1.5lbs) a week. Most people say if you have anything above 40lbs to lose, then 1kg a week is a safe and maintainable way to lose weight. When you have 20lbs to go, then 1lb a week will be ideal.

For many months now I've been very steady at 9-10 lb. lost every thirty days or so. That's about 1/3 lb. a day, but it's a wavier curve than that, with a cycle of 4-5 days usually. To stay at that loss level, I've had to reduce my calories several times as I got smaller. I'm still about 50 lbs. from goal, so I expect to slow down as I approach it. I've lost 75 lbs. so far.

For me, a realistic goal was how much I could cut back my calories and increase my activity. I have enough to lose that 2# a week is reasonable, but for me, it isn't. 1# a week is sustainable, so that's what I work at.

I think that for most people, a range of .5 to 1.5% change in BW per week is a pretty reasonable window.

So for example, if you are 200lbs, losing 1 to 3lbs/week is about right.

Certainly there may be exceptions to this.

"Realistic" varies from person to person - how addicted are you to bad or excess food? How much exercise can you tolerate or make time for? How disciplined are you? How much weight do you have to lose? Etc.

When I was losing, I found 2-3 lbs a week to be realistic for me. My BMI was fairly low - started out at 23.3 - and I was doing little to no exercise, but I was a Nazi about my food intake and was in ketosis.

    YMMV.
