I have pain on the inside of my calf around my shin area? Could this be shin spints? I always thought shin splints happen on the front part of you calf, on the shin bone?

Mine always flared up on the front of my shin like you said. I have actually had a similar sounding problem lately myself and wondered if it were shin splints creaping back in. Hopefully rest will take care of it. Good calf stretches is what really has helped me.0

I used to get them occasionally when I served. At one point I was getting them just walking. I started doing a lot of calf raises, and I stopped getting them.0

I had this once last year. It felt like it was on the inside between my calf and shin bone. It got worse and worse to the point that I had it x-rayed. Nothing. Perfectly clear x-ray. I finally took a couple weeks off and it totally went away. Not sure what it was.0 -
I've had that too. I was told by the orthopedist it was shin splints, but I've had shin splints and they usually feel like super itchy bruises right on the tibia0

"Shin splints" is a generic term for irritation of the shin area. Typically it is on the front but you can get it in various places. All the OP needs to know is that they should treat this just like any other case of shin splints.

whether it is shin splits or not you should pay attention to your pain and perhaps back off what you are doing for a while to prevent injury. I had shin splits in college and it was in the front0

Compression socks are good preventative for me. I always got them, then read that compression socks are a good preventative and I was able to train for a half marathon without the debilitating effects of shin splints that I had all through sports and military. Try them.0

Every time I got into running, I had to stop due to shin splints. I think I need to find a different way to keep fit these days...0

Could definitely be shin splints. Treat it like it is. Usually it's an overuse problem like doing too much too soon, a shoe problem or a surface problem. The only time I've had them is when I was doing gymnastics and spent too much time running on concrete in bare feet.0 -
Thanks everybody. I feel like they are worst when I start running after I take a day off from running. Soes that make any sense?0

Generally it is an overuse injury caused by excessive running or training and/or muscle imbalances of the hip, knee or foot. Do your feet pronate or if you were to do a squat would you notice your knees cave in slightly? There are a few things you can do that might help. Foam roll and then stretch your calf muscles, hamstrings and IT band (TFL) followed by some resisted ankle dorsiflexions, single leg calf raises and knee flexions while the leg is rotated inwardly.0

You could try arch supports, they put your foot/leg into a good angle which may help. They slip into any shoe, or you can find different kinds some or very light others give you support similar to that you would expect in a good trainer.0

Yeah it's probably shin splints. Posterior shin splints to be specific and that's where I get them every time. If you haven't yet, go to a running store and get fitted. You probably have lower arches which causes excess pronation when you step. You'll just need a more supportive shoe.
Also, idk how much you're running, but make time for stretching. Personally i don't stretch before or right after. I usually wait several hours to stretch but I spend at least 20 minutes doing it. Even with good shoes I end up with shin splints if I geta little too relaxed on the stretching.0 -

Thank you! I have been fitted. I was told I have week ankles. Actually I have really high arches. I have been running for about 5 years and I run 25-30 miles a week0 -

shin splints actually occur from overuse and repetitive movement.
I instruct any clients who experience shin splints to perform frequent self myofascial release, stretching, icing, and the most important thing you can do- rest. For some this may seem frustrating, but implementing sufficient and deliberate rest is the most critical aspect when dealing with these issues.
