"Waist: Measure the circumference of your waist. Use the tape to circle your waist (sort of like a belt would) at your natural waistline, which is located above your belly button and below your rib cage. (If you bend to the side, the crease that forms is your natural waistline.) Don’t suck in your stomach, or you’ll get a false measurement. If you generally wear your clothes below your waist, take that measurement as well." From: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-get-your-body-measurements.html

I think it's somewhat subjective based on body type. The narrowest part of my torso is way above my navel.

Do you all actually get a crease while bending sideways? I'm standing in front of a mirror and bending back and forth and finding that a ) it's strangely difficult to bend that way and b ) I have no crease, just a few ripples.

You don't? I thought everyone had this. I sew clothing and this was how I was taught to get the waistline.

Even if you don't have a visible dip, if you feel your side you should feel a soft patch between your pelvis below and your rib cage above. That's where your waist is, I think. It's just above belly button level on me.

I think it's due to my stretched skin. I have a weird torso

It can be tricky if you're very straight up and down, or male! In that case, about the middle between ribs a top of pelvis. And it should be squidgy, no bones getting in the way.

What I consider and measure as my waist is the 1" space between the bottom of my rib cage and top of my pelvis/hip bones. The medical professionals that measure my waist use 2" above my belly button.
