It's more the things that he should avoid. Certain people have different triggers, but for me when I had it badly, it was the usual, dairy, Spicy foods, coffee, alcohol and in particular red wine, starches like breads and pastas. If I stuck to veggies and grains and a bit of meat it was much better. Once I lost a few pounds it displeased though so hopefully it

Your friend should find out why he has acid reflux first. He should see a gastroenterologist. I suffered from acid reflux for over 20 years, and the cause of it was from a medical condition called primary hyperparathyroidism. This medical condition caused a myriad of other symptoms, but reflux was the first symptom, and it was unrelenting. I was put on proton pump inhibitors, which gave me relief. What I ate, or didn't eat, made no difference. Coffee, chocolate, and fried foods made my reflux worse, but cutting them out never made it go away.
Surgery corrected my medical condition, and I still had reflux. My GI specialist made sure we had no other reasons for my reflux, and we started to wean me off the PPIs, which was a process that took six solid months, and played total havoc with my digestive system during that process. I am now stabilizing, and have no need to restrict my diet to prevent reflux.0 -
Yes, defo get it checked. Mine is due to actual reflux disease, which is a problem with the top valve of the stomach which can only be corrected by surgery (which I don't want) so I'm on medication for life. It's mostly fat that troubles me, also any combo of fat and chilli, but thankfully the threshold is pretty high so I can eat most things, and the fallout is tolerable if I overdo it because of the wonderful, wonderful medication.
However, there are lots of other causes, some of which are serious and need treatment, others which are minor and can be corrected. On of the most common is infection with a bug called helicobacter pylori, and if you have that, it's great, because they can treat the infection and then the reflux goes away forever. Sadly I don't have that!
So nobody should live with reflux without getting it checked out, and nobody with actual reflux disease should try and tolerate it without medication. The meds are great, very few side effects, no resistance issues. Without them, reflux is a living hell. With them, it's a minor niggle.
Also, if your friend is overweight, they should try and lose it. Extra weight makes the reflux much worse.

I used to take prilosec every single day and now I don't use it at all and I can basically eat what ever I want. Tell him to find a friend that sells essential oils.....HOWEVER, if he is on other medication he needs to talk to his doctor first. I use young living...Digize and after about a month ginger....now I rarely get heartburn or acid reflux and just use a drop of ginger when I do. Results will vary by person. (No I do not sell essential oils and I was skeptical until I tried them)0

I agree about getting checked out. I was having it SO bad along with upper stomach bloating nausea after eating, etc.
turned out i had H. Pylori infection and then peptic ulcers.
p.s. mine was bad after eating literally anything but was made much worse by: hot mint tea (which i drank like 6 a day of), tomatoes, chocolate, oily foods, spicy foods, and any kind of soda.0
