It's called CICO. Calories in/Calories out0

Barring a metabolic disorder yup, that's it. Eating more than you expend causes weight gain, eating less causes weight loss.
The hard part is accuracy, most people just eyeball their portions and then complain about not losing. Measure, weigh & log every morsel of food that crosses your lips (and even then calories can not be 100%.....no 2 apples or oranges etc are identical)

At it's very core yes...that's the physics of it. But...to tell someone it's calories in/calories out and then send them on their way to fend for themselves is really doing a bit of a disservice and you would be ignoring all the physiological and psychological components of weight loss. Is there a reason you jump around from one diet to the next? Why haven't they been successful for you? Do you have support in place when you are trying to lose weight?
But yes...peel away the many layers that make up weight loss and you have the cold hard science that you should eat less than you are taking in. Yet that doesn't mean you can eat chips and soda all day while doing so in a caloric deficit. You want to do it in a way that promotes health and well being so you want to make sure you are eating nutrient dense foods from all 3 macronutrients--carbs, fat and protein. Carbs should be 45-65% of your calories, Fat 20-35% and Protein 10-35%
And I might suggest that you don't count calories...I know people that actually carry scales with them. You don't want to be that person. You know how much you are eating now...just eat a bit less. In may cases lowering your portion sizes will result in significant weight loss. But if you really need to keep track of how much you are eating just use your hand. The size of your palm is your protein portion, your closed fist is your veggies, carbs...the size of your palm, fats...about the size of your thumb. You see, you don't have to consult websites or databases or carry around scales...just use your hand to measure your portions.0 -

Nobody is suggesting the OP eat chips and soda all day. Once she gets the calorie intake in order she can work on her macros.

Didn't say that anyone told her to eat chips and soda...I'm confused by what you are trying to say. I'm simply letting her know that all calories are not created equal in the CICO equation. Did I give her bad advice perhaps? You no like what I say?0 -
