Newbie INO advice about 5k training

Well hello there.
I'm fairly new to working out. I started in February with a 12 week program for beginners at my gym. It incorporated weight machines and cardio. Before that I was a useless couch potato (although I did use to run in college many, many years ago). I really like lifting weights but I've found machines boring and monotonous. I've begun taking "lift & load" classes (soon to be Body Pump) at my gym which I thoroughly enjoy. My goal for the future is to overcome my apprehension of the weight room but for now the classes are doing it for me. I've also decided to join a local 5k training program that lasts 10 weeks and ends in a 5k. My question is this, should I take a hiatus from the weight classes while training for the 5k? Will one have any sort of negative impact on the other? It probably sounds ridiculous but again I don't know what I'm doing, only what I have found that I like. Thank you so much!
(I should probably add that I'm in a deficit as I am still trying to lose weight. I have lost 42 pounds since February and still have quite a few to go. Not sure if that is relevant to this question at all.)

It really depends on you, your heart, and what you weights regiment looks like. I weight trained and did the C25K program at the same time. I did the weights and did the B210K program, and I weight trained and did the McMillian 12 week Half Marathon plan.

I would say go for it. But make sure you take full advantage of Rest Days. Your leg muscles are going to need it.

Thank you, I'll look into both of those programs. As far as weights go, I'm mostly working on learning proper form and getting used to surviving the day after doing all those squats. My tentative plan is to go to classes 2x a week, and incorporate 5k training three days a week. With my schedule it feels like a big bite to chew.

IMO you should be fine doing both programs. Play it by ear, obviously, but the 5k plan is likely going to move you slowly from run/walks into straight running and give you plenty of time to adjust even along with lifting.

You should be absolutely fine doing a few "lift and load" classes a week while training for a 5K. Just make sure you build your running base slowly, watch for signs of over training, and most importantly listen to your body. If your body needs rest give it rest.

I just started lifting weights about 6 months ago and completed my first 5k (5.5mph on the treadmill) last week so I feel I can relate. When I run, my speed and endurance is way better when I am not sore from other exercise. The more I do weight training, the easier it is to run. I do something like this: W) Core and Cardio Th) Arms and Cardio F) Jogging and something afterwards... my legs are pretty sore from all the jogging and cardio so I don't normally do more than one leg day a week anyways
