For the average workouts that comprise about 95% of what 95% of the population does when they exercise, you don't need anything but adequate food and water--and for many, you don't even need the food right beforehand.
I think that for many average exercisers, supplements can become a distraction and take away focus from the most important ways to improve, e.g. Consistency and quality of routine.

I prefer to spend my money on shiny things than somewhat doubtfully effective supplements.

I've been training for four decades and the explosion in "fashion accessories" for very ordinary workouts by really ordinary people is really stark and sometimes it's frankly verging on the ridiculous. Supplementing like a pro, training like a clown in some cases. Wrist curls and a protein shake for example!
For many people the focus is all wrong.
If I'm cycling hard/fast for over two hours then I will fuel my ride but with food/drink, carb gels if I have to for longer rides (easy to carry). Otherwise exercise just fits in my normal day.
