Anyone with any opinions on smartphone-based tracker versus Wearable?

I use both. I have a Garmin Vivosmart HR that tracks my day to day walking and HR. Then I use Strava to track my workouts.

They're two different things, wearables and tracking apps.

I Like using tracking apps to see my progress over time.

For GPS a dedicated device is more reliable, and generally has a longer battery life, than a phone. But if I were to recommend a GPS device it wouldn't be a FitBit. Which is best varies according to price point, but I'd generally say Garmin, Suunto, Polar then TomTom.

The issue about battery life is very dependent on what training you do. My Forerunner has a 20 hour life, which is fine for marathons and will continue to be good for up to 100km runs, whereas my phone would struggle to last for an entire trail marathon.

For step tracking and the like, again a wearable is beneficial as it's always on you, whereas you may not always carry your phone around. That said, it depends what you're wanting from the tracking. IF it's indications and trends then phone based may do what you need, if it's more then a trunk or wrist worn device may be better. Personally I use a VivoSmart HR.
