I have been with a trainer for 6 months, and have had a very positive experience. The biggest thing I needed was help with my nutrition. The great thing about my gym, is you can work with different trainers, as they all have their own style.

If you find a good one, then probably worth it. The problem is to find a good trainer, I think... having seen a few of them in the gym.

A good trainer is worth their weight in gold... but finding a good trainer will be the difficult part. There are far more bad trainers than good ones in my experience.

NO. At least 90% of people in the gym don't know what they're doing, and about 60-70% of trainers. Do your own research and find your own motivation.

Yes! As long as he/she is a good trainer... Look at their credentials and make sure the trainer is nationally certified and from there, look at that trainers testimonials :)

Do you have any raw data to back that up? Or do you just like to generalize? There are bad trainers out there, but unless you have worked with everyone one of them, saying 60-70% don't know what they are doing is complete *kitten*.

I would have to agree that a good trainer is very worth it. Growing up active i was not accustomed to going to the gym, what exercises to do or how to correctly and safely do them. A trainer has helped teach me combinations of exercises that are roght for my body type and goals, how to safely do them, and how to get a better workout in less time. The key is being honest and putting in the work of learning and giving 100%. Trainers don't work miracles but a good one will teach you to make your own miracles.

Yes but my trainer taught me the compound barbell lifts, which literally changed my life. I can't imagine paying someone to watch me do burpees and jumping jacks.

I'll give you my opinion on this but I'll disclose my biases first: I'm a former personal trainer in a gym and a current online coach and trainer (there are some similarities between the two but some definite differences as well).

My opinion on this topic hasn't changed a ton but perhaps a little.

First of all I think differences from trainer to trainer are potentially gigantic. I have seen trainers in person who I think are truly outstanding and I've also seen trainers in person who I think shouldn't be training people.

So it depends a whole lot on the quality of trainer you are getting.

It ALSO depends on how well that trainer is able to connect with you and how well they are able to meet your individual needs.

And based on this, I think it's a great idea for you to establish your needs. WHAT are you trying to accomplish by hiring a trainer? Is it accountability? Is it knowledge? Program design? Technique? General information about diet and exercise?

I think a good trainer will listen to your needs and your goals. They should also take those needs and goals into consideration (along with limitations) when they train you. I think they will communicate effectively with you. I think they will exhibit some degree of emotional intelligence and empathy when the time comes for it. I think they should answer questions genuinely and admit that they don't know the answer when they can't.

As a trainer yes we are worth it. But like said, there are good ones and bad. Find a good one that u connect with and who listens to what you want. Also try to have clear goals, it will make things easier for the both of you.

As everyone else has said, a good one is more than worth it. My old trainer got me back into lifting slowly and safely after my youngest was born.

My coach? Worth far more than what he charges. He manages to give me the best version of what I want month after month and the difference in my lifting with him is night and day.

Thanks everyone! I officially signed up today. The great thing about my gym is I can interchange trainers, and get in workouts with the training manager any time!
