Mono-Diglycerides

Should we avoid Mono-Diglycerides? I see they are common emulsifier, like in peanut butter. I did a quick search on Google and found several articles which claim that they're no better than Trans fat. Is it true?

Links:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/445850-what-is-bad-about-mono-diglycerides/

However, I used to think they were harmless.

"There is no evidence in the available information on mono- and diglycerides of fatformaing fatty acids that demonstrates or suggests reasonable grounds to suspect a hazard to the public when they are used at levels that are now current or that might reasonably be expected in the future." http://www.fda.gov/Food/IngredientsPackagingLabeling/GRAS/SCOGS/ucm260418.htm

Now, I'm confused. Could anyone share some reliable info on this matter?

Also, I would love to hear your opinion on Sanitarium original peanut butter. http://www.sanitarium.com.au/mobile/products/spreads/peanut-butter/original-smooth-peanut-butter and http://www.sanitarium.com.au/mobile/products/spreads/peanut-butter/original-smooth-peanut-butter

These two are the only variants of Sanitarium peanut butter available at the grocery store nearest to my house.

Thank you!

You don't have peanut butter free of emulsifier ?

I ready somewhere emulsifiers are bad for your colon and your gut bacteria. Can't remember where I saw it though I do try to stay away from any emulsifiers

Even eggs? Or mustard? Both contain emulsifiers.

You can google just about anything and find out that it's bad for you. I especially like things that talk about "gut bacteria" since everyone's is different and it's so difficult to verify.

Dredging this thread up because someone today told me that some processors who previously had trans fats in their products upped the amount of emulsifiers to compensate.

Anyone have new info or perspective to add?

I eat at least Dempster's Whole Wheat Tortilla a day, and was surprised to see how high up on the ingredient list these emulsifiers were:

Whole grain whole wheat flour including the germ, water, vegetable oil (canola or soybean), mono and diglycerides, molasses, salt, potassium sorbate, sugar, sodium bicarbonate, sodium propionate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, fumaric acid, cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate, guar gum, cellulose gum, maltodextrin, carrageenan, calcium acid pyrophosphate, calcium peroxide.
