Salad and other low calorie options. Small portions. Eat a little less the day before or after. Extra exercise.
    You can handle this. B)

I keep forgetting that holidays are even a thing.

Is someone actually forcing you to eat something?
You have the freedom to not spend time with people who don't respect your choices. You have the freedom to bring a low calorie dish to share. You have the freedom to not celebrate any holiday. You can choose to plan your day so it fits your calorie goal or eat at maintenance. You can choose to get some exercise.
It is one day. It isn't going to derail your health and fitness goals unless you go overboard every day.

I'm throwing a party today. Pulled pork (sauces on the side to add to preference), chicken apple sausages, salad with blueberries, radishes, and feta (red white and blue) with dressings on the side, fruit tray, and some snacks - chips and salsa, spicy pumpkin seeds, sweet popcorn, trail mix. Then ice cream sundaes for dessert. I will fill my plate with salad topped with a little pork and salsa on top. Snack on a few spicy seeds. Then have a small serving of ice cream or a couple glasses of wine depending on what I am more in the mood for.

Or freedom to choose to eat whatever the heck I want to enjoy - hamburgers, BBQ, potato salad, ice cream - practicing moderation. And knowing if I go back for seconds, I will probably maintain my current weight and resume the weight loss in a few days. If losing weight means I have to eat salads and low-cal for the rest of my life, I'm gonna be missing out on a lot of fun holidays and good food.

I mostly think of watermelon when it comes to the 4th of July. It was just about the only time we had it when I was a kid.

The rest of the cookout food can either be eaten in a sensible portion or avoided. Burgers are so easy to customize and keep calories in check - load up with veggies and you have a giant juicy burger with or without a bun depending on calories available and overall choices of other meal items. Grilled chicken is pretty low calorie and still incredibly delicious. If you want bbq sauce, have a weighed amount on your piece/s or keep it on the side to dip. Any other food I don't care about.

Eta I forgot corn on the cob! Roasted on the grill THEN shucked. Use the peeled back husks as the holder. Again not a bad calorie hit and is delicious without butter if no extra calories available.

Menu for the holiday: smoked pork butts and smoked chicken thighs with a tomato, cucumber, corn & feta salad, homemade black bean hummus for dipping veggies as appetizer and super cold black cherries for dessert. Pretty, festive and healthy. Now, to just avoid beer and wine!!
