PCOS and weight loss :(

Hi all, my name is Samantha and im 25 years old.
I found out i had PCOS a few years back and am having a hard time losing weight as a diet is so hard. Cant have carbs due to PCOS and need to also have low GI foods and low calorie. Anyone going through the same thing but have found a good diet to go on?

    Hi Samantha, welcome! :)

    A diet is a way of eating, and to lose weight on any diet you just need to eat at calorie deficit. I would say just to choose the foods you like to eat which are in the list your doctor said you can eat, weigh your food and measure your liquids, log everything you eat and stick to a calorie goals.

    The thing about PCOS is that it might take some trial and error over several weeks to find you calorie base for you to lose weight.

    If you do a search under groups you will probably find a PCOS group. :)

    Hey!! I am 31 I have had PCOS diagnosed since i was 20. I have had a very successful loss so far of 85 pounds. Feel free to add me and take a look at my diary. Good Luck you can do this!! I also started Jan 14th of this year...you can really do this!!

    My doctor just said low carb but never gave me a list of food i can and cant eat.
    As for your diary akerra ive had a look. Only difference is with me i cant do much exercise right now due to an injury. Although i do like your choice of foods. I wasnt sure about oats for food at first. Artificial sweeteners should be okay in oats?

    is a great place to start!! ANY of the recipes you find there will be low carb and if you have other food restrictions you should be able to find some ideas. Southbeach diet had 3 phases and is very low carb. Hope it helps

    Low carb doesn't mean you can't have any

    Use mfp to give you a calorie goal and then you can work on figuring out how many carbs work for you.

    Hi Samantha. Im Valerie, 31 and I have Pcos. Been doing mfp for over 2 months now and have lots 19lbs just sticking to my calorie goal (most of the time) and reducing carbs slowly (went from 40% to 35% and planning to go lower as I get used to it). When it comes to carbs I choose veg and fruit (with low GI) and switched to complex carbs (brown bread instead of white, egg pasta instead of wheat pasta etc). One of the good things you can do is to eat small portion of protein with your carbs to stabilise insulin levels. For example if you want a piece of bread, add egg/cottage cheese/chicken/etc to go with it. Don't forget about good fats (olive/coconut oil, avocado etc). I limited sugar intake and try not to go over 60g per day (mainly comes from fruit and dairy). I'd occasionally have something like chocolate or cake. Add exercise to your life and that will help to combat Pcos symptoms. You can do any exercise that makes you feel good (swimming, cycling, walking, dancing, gym etc).

    Hi, I also have PCOS and have struggled to lose weight previously. Firstly I cut out all sugar, chocolate, pastries, etc and went ultra low fat. End of strict first week and put on 2lbs. Realised quickly that low carb was the only way to go. I have now lost 3lbs in one week (I know this is mostly water!) but I am also running and doing weights.

    I want to lose another half a stone but this is hard to shift. I eat plenty of fish, nuts, fruit, salad, fresh green veg, yoghurt and eggs. No potatoes, rice, pasta or bread. So far, so good!

    Hi Samantha, I also have PCOS. I do always find when I eat a minimal diet of carbs that the weight really drops off, are you prescribed metformin? That also helps with the insulin resistance associated with pcos thus helping you lose weight.

    It might be worth reading up about the ketogenic diet, I know a lot of pcos ladies have great results with this
