Looking for something a little different

Hi all! So, question regarding the DVD exercise programs (P90X, Insanity, 30 Day Shred, Jillian Michaels, etc.). Can someone give me a run down of what these are and opinions on what the best ones are? Are they all kind of the same? I've been avoiding them because I can't tell how many calories I burn but I'm getting a heart rate monitor and now want to start doing some of these, although I have to admit I'm a little scared! My fitness level isn't awesome (MUCH better than it was, but still...). Just looking for any advice or any others beside the ones listed above. Thank you!

Insanity is a high intensity cardio program and isn't really for beginners. It is recommended that you be able to run a mile and do 10 push ups before you consider trying this program, and it is not for anyone with a history of back, knee or shoulder problems.

P90X is a muscle-confusion strength building program intended for intermediate lifters and above. There is also a P90, which I believe is more geared toward beginners.

30DS and the Jillian Michaels DVDs are lower intensity cardio routines more geared toward average fitness levels, and might be a good place to start. You can also find some good routines on youtube (fitness blender is an MFP favorite).

Nerdfitness.com has some good bodyweight routines that you can do at home, and can help you gear up for something a little more intense, like Insanity.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks! I can definitely run a mile and do 10 pushups but I think I may look into the 30 Day Shred. Thanks for the advice!

I have never done the Insanity or the P90X but I have 3 Jillian Michael's DVDs and I think they are a real workout! I have 30DS (30 Day Shred), Ripped In 30 and KickBox FastFix. I really like them. If you try these and are looking for something similar I also have a TaeBo DVD from Billy Blanks and that is a butt kicker! But I love to do it because I know I am burning some calories!
