Footwear

When I am on the elliptical my back (I have stenosis and some herniated discs) really starts to tighten up. This affects my hamstrings, glutes, and knees. Even with my back issues it wasn't until January that this started to happen. I've been doing the elliptical for years with no issues.

I was thinking the other day- could it be my footwear? I use running sneakers on the elliptical as was suggested to me years ago.

I ask this question because my sneakers are definitely old, but the bottom is still in great condition. Very little wear (since you don't move your feet on the elliptical). I remember being told when I purchased the sneakers that as long as the bottom was ok then the sneakers were ok to wear. Is this true? The bottoms are great as I said, but the rest of the show is very soft and flexible.

Could this be the reason I am getting such back issues with my back while on the machine?

(I wanted to ask before I go out and buy new sneakers if necessary).

It could definitely be your shoes. Make sure you go to a running shoe store to get fit. The life of a running shoe is about 350-400 miles for a standard cushion shoe and 500 miles for a high cushion shoe. It is not whenever the shoe falls apart. If you can bend your shoe in half, it's time to replace and turn those old ones into gardening shoes.

Then yup I am way overdue. You could take my sneakers and do three folds to them. I am glad I asked. Again, I was told that if the bottom isn't worn out then they don't need to be replaced.
