Need a little help

Been working on the diet thing for over a year now and not much has changed. I was told to bring my calorie count down to 1200 and do lots of cardio. Well, I've been working on that and I have determined that I still eat too much..:(. Been trying but I tend to eat more at night and truthfully my diet is lousy at time but I do have some good days. I get more hungry later in the evening and I'm not sure the 1200 thing is the best for me since I continue to go over.
