distance on elliptical machines?

Using the elliptical machine at the gym for cardio because it's easier on my knees. Regardless of intensity, is 2 miles (example) on the elliptical machine the same as walking/running the same distance on land?

    Depends on the machine. On the elliptical I have, miles is influenced by power output and resistance. They term it as miles equivalent output or something, but it's not directly tied to any stride length.
