I go to Planet Fitness. If you hate that gym & it's philosophy, please don't reply to this thread.
Anyway, they have this on-site trainer & you can sign up to take classes from this person for free. Are you supposed to tip the trainer? I don't want to insult the person but I also don't want to be viewed as cheap. What is the protocol?

I've never tipped a trainer1

I would answer but you said I'm not allowed to

It's not really appropriate to tip them. If you use them frequently it's nice to give them a little something for holidays, but it's not necessary.1

I belong to PF and spoke with the "trainer". I thought she was a trainer too, but during the course of our conversation she told me PF does not employ trainers. Basically it's just a PF employee who conducts small classes showing people how to use the equipment and a few different routines are discussed. Most PF members don't realize the meeting isn't a private one. It's a small group of members that meet with the PF employee. The employee helps the members individually decide upon a program involving resistance and or cardio based upon their goals. No, I would not tip the PF employee. I still like the place and belong to it.
This PF employee also told me she's a trainer independently on the outside, and has been for 25 years. But that she doesn't work in that capacity at PF. I don't know if she's allowed to solicit potential private clients within PF and also train them at the same gym when she's conducting those classes and showing people the ropes? I was too shy to ask at the time. It's a bit confusing.
But your question is a good one. Are private trainers tipped? I don't know. Maybe we'll hear from some of them on this thread and they'll tell us.
No, private trainers aren't tipped. You're already paying them very well.0 -

That's why I don't know if I'm supposed to pay this person. I assumed the person wasn't an official "trainer" but since I'm not paying anything for the services, I wondered if it was required.
Consensus here seems to be no.
