How long should I exercise ?

Hello! How long should I be on my cross trainer if I am currently on a 1200 cal diet? I have worked 45-60 minutes this week. Must I eat my exercise calories and how does this help? I always have the mindset of not eating my exercise calorie...HELP!

MFP is designed for you to eat at least some of your earned exercise calories. You'll find differing opinions on this here. In my personal experience, eating too little (and for me that's 1200-1400 calories while exercising) caused my weight loss to stall for two months. You also run the risk of hormone changes, muscle loss, and health complications.

There's no set amount that you must exercise to lose weight. Whatever works in your schedule and helps you meet your personal fitness goals. Just make sure you're eating enough to fuel those workouts.

It's not how long, but how intense that matters more.

At 1200 cals, probably not at all. Though it's hard to say for sure with so little info.

I do agree with niner's comment though.

There is a deficit built into your diet with MFP that is net of any exercise you do...this means exercise is extra activity...this means you will lose weight just eating your 1200 calories without lifting a finger in exercise as per the goal you stated to MFP. When you exercise, this is unaccounted activity that needs proper fueling.

Diet for weight control; exercise for fitness. Identify fitness specific goals you would like to achieve and then fuel that activity properly...kill your workouts and enjoy great success.

ooooh.. so when my karate trainer keeps us busy for two hours its bad...? Especially if I was biking before and after training.. getting me up to about 3 hours of excercise in one go? Oh dear...

No, like someone said its not about how long its about how intense.. and how much your body can take already!

(and yes, eat the exercise back)
