Internal conversation & performance

I finally changed that internal conversation... you know that non-stop chatter you have in your head. Negotiate then renegotiate with yourself how many reps on heavy squat; how many flights to climb on the stairmill. That voice giving you a dozen reasons why you can blow off the next set.
You look at your journal and you know what you're in for over the next 90 minutes, then that annoying little voice starts trying to undermine your resolve. Well I decided if that voice was going to yammer non-stop, it better be saying something productive. Blew through my routine list today with so much resolve I had to check and recheck that I in fact hit every exercise on my list.

So what does the new voice say? I need a new running voice.0

@Lorrpb that voice kept repeating words that made me focus on what I wanted to achieve...Power. Strength. Courage. It sounds silly, but affirmation makes the difference between success and failure. I finally realized there is a moment in every workout, every run, every ride that I have to make a decision--the decision to succeed or fail. It's not about the determination I start with, but the determination I end with.

When I'm lifting, I'm typically so focused internally that there is no voice. When I'm setting up, the routine is so familiar that it drives everything out.
Between sets, my voice usually goes from "this is awesome" to "oh my word, he expects me to do what?!?!?"
It wasn't always like that, but time and dedication have transformed from bargaining to get out to loving the movements.2 -
