Personal Trainer Qualifications

What sort of qualifications should one look for in a personal trainer? I notice that at my gym, some have REPS qualifications, some have BScs in sports and nutrition, some have various boxing qualifications.

The one I currently have taken on is REPS level 3 advanced personal trainer, boxing level 3, kickboxing level 3, circuit training instructor and core stability instructor. He has been a PT for 10 years.

He did an abs class today and I noticed that the class totally kicked the butt of the other PTs at my gym who took part, which made me wonder if my choice of trainer is not too bad.

I wouldn't judge anyone based on their qualifications and/or experience. Someone who practices what they preach would be more important, eg if he is a yoga instructor then I would hope he is not only good at doing yoga but also good at teaching yoga to both beginners and those beyond beginner status. Someone who understands the best method to teach weight training and traditional cardiovascular routines specific to an individual's goals would also be a requirement.

That said, he certainly does have the qualifications and experience. The important thing is to listen to him and talk to him about your problems, almost as if he is your doctor.

    Good luck.

A book only taught me so much. On-the-job experience is where I got most of my expertise. He sounds like he's been around the block a few times.

Yes, that is what I thought. I had my pick for the last few years of trainers with BScs and the like, at the gym, but none of them felt right.
This guy has an incredible physique and he does the stuff he teaches. I never see the other trainers actually doing anything in the gym, besides standing around or sitting in the office.
