How accurate are the calorie counters on the exercise equipment?

This has been a question on my mind lately...Am I really burning as many calories as these machines are telling me? How accurate is MFP when you just plug in the exercise and the minutes performed? Does anyone have any thoughts or know the answer?

It depends on the machine. Some are better than others. Keep in mind that the ones that don't allow you to enter sex, weight or age are probably less reliable. Plus, keep in mind that things like holding on to handrails can affect your calorie burn and the machine wont' account for it.
And as for MFP, the same principal applies. The more detailed the entry, like walking at 3.0 mph, are more reliable. Vague entries like "elliptical" (which does not account for intensity at all) or entries with descriptions like "moderate effort" can be problematic.
