Even though I hit my protein goal daily, I was told you can never have enough protein. Especially after a lifting session at the gym. I am going to try the Protein Shake
1) Which is the best protein powder? Looking for low calorie/sugar
2) What are your favorite recipes for the shakes?
Do they take the place of a meal or are they just in addition??

I use Optimum Nutrition whey protein. Double chocolate is my favorite but the vanilla ice cream is also good. Per serving, it's got 120 calories, 1 g fat, 3 g carbs, 1 g sugar, and 24 G protein. It's not super cheap (50 bucks for a 5 lb tub off Amazon) but it blends SO well. I use it as a substitute for creamer in my coffee and also do a shake with just water. Sorry I don't have any recipes for you!
I always have one in the mornings before I workout and sometimes I have one afterward. On non workout days, I have a serving split up into two with two coffees throughout the morning. I use it to hit my protein goals (100+ a day) because I find it can be difficult for me to get that much protein from food.0 -
I use a protein powder called Orgain. It is organic, healthy, and 24 g of protein per shake. It was created by a physician who had cancer who after researching all of the protein shakes and the harmful additives that is in most protein powders, he and his registered dietitian wife created their own company called Orgain. They now have Orgain for kids and also protein bars. It is plant-based, organic and very healthy for your body my favorite is vanilla bean and I get it on Amazon, eBay, or I go directly to their website. He also is now cancer free after going to an all organic diet.1

People can tell you anything, but everything isn't necessarily true. Yes, you can have too much protein. If you add so much protein to your diet that you hit, or go over, your maintenance calories, you will not lose, or gain, weight. If you get really, really, a lot of protein, over time, you can harm your kidneys. If you replace a big part of your food with protein supplements, you may risk deficiencies. Supplements also cost money - food is usually cheaper and more tasty. You can't utilize more than you can utilize. How much this is, is a hot topic, a blanket statement of "more is better" is not getting you anywhaere good. Be careful.1

as long as you're hitting your minimum protein daily goal then you're fine - if you eat more fine too - but I wouldn't overly push it
protein timing has no impact on muscle repair / growth
I don't do protein powders or supplements - I prefer meat, fish, lentils and yogurt so can't be of help in recommendations I'm just surprised to see if you're hitting your targets that you feel a need to supplement too ...seems pointless in calorie wastage to me0 -
I'm rather lazy. I buy the tetra packaged Premier Protein shakes and Muscle Milk from Costco. Easy to throw in my bag every morning. I add flavored instant coffee to the chocolate shake and drink over ice. That's my version of iced mocha. I'll add instant coffee to Muscle Milk, too, and add some nutmeg and cinnamon (also over ice).
I use these as meal replacements (breakfast, late dinner, I worked through lunch and the cafeteria is closed). I also use them as "snacks" when I'm craving a Starbucks fix.0 -
I also use Optimum Nutrition and like the Vanilla Ice Cream or Extreme Milk Chocolate. Here are a couple of my favorite recipes:
PB&J
1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese
2 tablespoons peanut flour (PB2)
1 tbsp jelly
2 tbsp Splenda or stevia
1 cup water
5-10 ice cubes depending on how thick you like it
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
Peppermint Patty
1/2 cup ff cottage cheese
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tbsp Splenda or stevia
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
1 cup water
5-10 ice cubes
A few drops peppermint extract
Throw it all in the blender until smooth.
I know cottage cheese sounds weird but it makes the shakes creamy and adds more protein. I like to drink these at night because they feel like dessert.0 -
Hope it works for you. However, I have found my body does best on a variety of real whole foods and protein from both plant, animals, fish and yogurt. When I drink my nutrition, my body doesn't get the same satiety signals. I keep nuts and a hard-boiled egg available. Finally, those powders can be more expensive per gram of protein than real food. Just my two cents.0
-
PS - I actually embrace the fact that it's hard to get enough protein from food. It forces me to really scrutinize the nutrient profile of the food I eat.0
-
I like to add pasteurized liquid egg whites from a carton to my smoothie or iced latte to up the protein content. My stomach can not tolerate whey powders.0

If you don't have a membership to costco or even sams club, you now have a good excuse.
They have very good prices on protein powders.
Costco has ON nutrition which has been rated near the top. Cost about .70 /serving.
Recipe: Make in a cheap blender with skim milk (for extra protein).
Meal replacement: Yes for me, for breakfast sometimes. I have a snack at 10 am.0 -
I use Optimum Nutrition in Double Chocolate and Cookies and Cream. I use 1 cup of cashew milk for a creamier effect. With these I just throw in ice and use my Vitamix. I have a forty minute commute to work, so this is my go-to breakfast if I didn't prepare the night before, or when I work out late to keep me from getting hungry during the night. Sometimes if I'm way short of my protein goal, I might throw in a little peanut butter or egg white. I also use the Vanilla flavor with cashew milk and fresh/frozen fruit, like peaches or strawberries if I'm wanting more of a "dessert" effect.
I also save up and refrigerate any pressed coffee I didn't use all week, and on the weekends blend it into a protein shake or two after a long bike ride.
Sorry to say, I don't vary too much with my recipes. I find I'm more apt to drink it if I can just get it mixed up and go with it rather than gather together a bunch of ingredients.0 -
If you like gingerbread, Oxygen magazine has a recipe for a delicious Gingerbread cookie shake: 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1/2 cup vanilla enriched Rice Dream, 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt, 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 T molasses, and ice cubes. Blend and drink ! Mmmmmm
I also like a Creamsicle, which is a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of vanilla protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat or Greek vanilla (or plain or coffee) yogurt. Blend and drink.
The Key Lime Protein Shake is blended with the juice of a lime, 2 tsp lime zest, 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 1 T coconut, a cup of milk, and 1-2 packets of Stevia (optional).
The Chocolate Maple Shake is made by blending a cup of milk, 3 T protein powder, 1 T cocoa powder, and 1 tsp maple syrup
Last but not least, for a change, I blend a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of chocolate protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat coffee yogurt. Also good!
