im 56 have been working out 3 times a week for a few months finally feeling stronger and then I hurt my back. I have a large disc extrusion which has displaced the nerve at L3. I don't want to lose what little strength I have gained any ideas on what exercises might be safe?

This is something you should talk over with your doctor. Hopefully you will get a referal to a physiotherapist.
Making sure your protein is high while not exercising will help preservation a little.

Herniated L5 disc here. I do exercises given to me by my physical therapist and treadmill walking. When it's flared up (but I can still walk) sometimes it's as slow as 2.4mph, but it's still walking!
Yoga also felt good. Same properties as my PT exercises.0 -
Swimming and biking are both awesome after you have done them for a while. Much of my weight gain over the years has been the result of stopping exercising when my back was out or recovering from surgeries (I have also had bilateral hip replacements). Please don't try to push the envelope when your back is involved. Let it heal.2
