Expectations?

Hi everyone,

Currently, I'm 128 pounds as a 5'4 woman. Two weeks ago, I was 125 pounds. Then Ramadan ended, so I didn't fast anymore. I started strength training too. My weight got up to 130 pounds. Now it's 128 pounds, so I guess I actually did gain some weight.

I'm still eating at a deficit and I am trying to log more strictly. I'm doing full body strenght training + some running 3x a week. I want to cut some more before I do body recomp, because I think it's easier. My goal weight is 116 pounds.

But I don't know what to expect. Did I gain weight, because I ate too much? Or will this gain disappear after my body adjusted to my new routine? Also, if I'm at a calorie deficit, will the weight lost continue as usual? Or will it be slower because of the strenght training? Is the strenght training going to help me retain my muscles and even make me stronger?
What changes could I see the next few months?

You gained weight due to the new exercise. It's just water, not fat or muscle. And yes, if you're in a deficit you will lose. Make sure you log everything as accurately as possible and be patient. Being close to your goal, it's going to be slow loss.

@malibu927 Glad to hear that it's water gain. I thought it wouldn't be water if it sticks for more than 2 weeks.

Not sure where you heard that but water can stick around longer than 2 weeks.

Yes I expect it's all water from the stress of fasting, the new exercise etc.

there are multiple reason's for water retention and it can last for a long time...a lot longer than 2 weeks.

@jemhh @SezxyStef It's something I just thought, no real explanation. Thank you for clarifying!

You may want to start using something like www.weightgrapher.com to understand how your weight naturally fluctuates around a weight level and is not a single number mainly because of water weight changes due to food, muscle repair, hormones....

With sufficient strength training you ought to see a small slow down in the overall speed of your weight loss.

This does not mean your fat loss will slow down.

Ugh mfp. Killed whole rest of post about body composition changes with example. no time to re write. Sorry.

Just remember that you don't just lose fat. Lean mass yields about 800Cal, fat 3500. And to build lean mass requires closer to 4000 (per lb figures)

@PAV8888 Thank you for your reply. I've been stepping on the scale daily and indeed, my weight fluctuates. That's why I only log Saturday mornings after bathroom. Today I'm 57.5 kg/ 127 lbs. Does that mean that I'm losing the water weight?
I'm aware that you don't lose only fat. I've lost 10 kg/22 lbs and my arms are so thin now. With strength training, I'm hoping that the weight loss now will be only fat. Once I'm 53 kg/ 116 lbs, I'm going to get my macro's right and start toning up. Taking one step at a time.

So... I have Hashimoto's disease and I am using Euthyrox because of it.
My GP called me yesterday and he told me that my TSH is way too high, but my T4 is in the acceptable range. I have to use a higher dose now.

What should I expect now? How will this affect my weightloss? I haven't lost any weight last few weeks, but I wasn't logging properly. So I doubt it's because of my thyroïd
Does a high TSH slow down weightloss, even when T4 is considered normal? And will my weight go up after changing the med's dose?

Perhaps these are questions you could ask your GP. Not to blow you off, but really, I think they will be able to give you better answers to your medical related questions.

@oolou: There are lots of other people with thyroïd problems here, that's why I asked here.

I have hashis and whenever my levels are off I lose weight slower, retain more water, and have less energy. Getting your hormone levels balanced is important.
