Logging while on holiday, give me your tips and encouragement

Hi there,

I'm one week into my 3 week holiday, and because not logging during trips away has derailed me in the past, I've decided to keep logging right the way through this time.

I'm aiming to maintain, and have my calorie goal adjusted to suit. So far I'm not doing too badly, the numbers suggest I will have gained about half a pound of fat this week, which is nothing to panic about. However, I'm finding it a real challenge, keeping my eating within limits when I'm nowhere near a normal routine. If you have any tips or experience specifically to do with sticking to a goal when away from home and out of routine, I'd love to hear them.

(I will not find out the effect on my weight until I get home, as I have not brought my bathroom scales on holiday with me. Mr. Garage suggested it, but I felt that was taking things too far!)

If you know where you are going check and see if the cafe / restaurant has online menu's , that way you can check before hand what the calories in the meals are . If your at family then check whats on the menu so to speak for dinner etc and log the recipe into mfp . You could also buy good healthy snacks to have during the day and prelogging seems to be a favorite for lots of people but of course this all depends on the kind of holiday and where you are .

I mindful of portion sizes but i don't let it interfere with having fun. I also stay active, we build our vacations around hiking. When I get back, I start logging. The 4th of July weekend I came home 10 pounds up (mostly water weight from chips and beer)and within 3 weeks I'm down to my goal weight.

I like villas with private pools so always take my kitchen scales

We don't eat out for every meal so those we do eat for I choose wisely but happily ..fresh fish, steak etc

The meals I have at 'home' tend to be fresh salads, olives, fruits, meats, cheeses, brads (edit for typo: should clearly be breads, but brads is making me snigger) ..anything that I can prepare a big lot of and stick in a Tupperware to grab ...also I love the way fruits and vegetables taste in hot climates and I have lots of diet sodas and prosecco/ cava or white wine spritzers for alcohol of choice generally

...or cheese and ham toasties ...cos kids

I do lots of walking with music, generally early morning before anyone lose wakes up because places are fascinating when there are no tourists and you are an early riser

I do lots of swimming, cos private pool

And this ...most importantly this ....I never ever miss out on an ice cream on a beach ...cos holiday :)

I am flying out tomorrow for my main 2 week summer holiday :)

I won't weigh until I've been home for 5 days minimum, well I will but I won't log it because there's always water weight with flying
