Small compilation of basic answers to the most common questions on MFP.
What's the best diet?
Barring any health issues, ANY DIET you can sustain over a long term that helps lead you to your goals is the "best" diet.
For weight loss: ANY DIET that includes a moderate calorie deficit than you can do.
For weight gain: ANY DIET that includes a surplus that you can do.
For weight maintenance: ANY DIET that allows you to not eat/undereat more than you burn.
What's the best exercise to lose fat?
While exercise can help to create a calorie deficit, there are no specific exercises to lose fat. Exercise is for health, fitness and improving one's current and genetic shape.
Why am I not losing weight?
The basic reasons are:
You're eating more than you think.
You're not burning as much as you think.
Your metabolic rate has compensated for the amount of calories you're taking in (usually when people under eat more than they need to consistently).
Why am I gaining weight even though I'm eating less?
Weight loss isn't linear. You can do the same exact thing diet and exercise wise and the two weeks can result much differently when it comes to weight.
Water retention from hormone fluctuation, sodium intake, exercise and muscle recovery.
Time of day you weigh.
