The ease of lowering cholesterol is whether it's dietary high or genetic high. Many find losing weight helps but only if there is no genetic element.

Is it your triglycerides that are high? If that is the case you should cut out processed foods, baked goods and fatty foods. Talking to your Dr about lowering your counts would be most beneficial because he/she can tell you what foods to avoid and may have to give you a statin drug to help lower your numbers.

My mom has good results following South Beach Diet. I had good results when staying in a calorie deficit, working out daily, and limiting sugar.

I lowered my cholesterol by losing weight. I lost 30 lbs and dropped cholesterol 30 points. I ate sugar, saturated fats, high cholesterol foods, but stayed under my calorie limit.

My Dad had bypass surgery, followed a vegetarian diet, and was prescribed the maximum dose of Lipitor. He is obese. His cholesterol did not drop.

As mentioned above, it really depends on what is causing the high cholesterol.

Oatmeal for breakfast every day helps my cholesterol.

Walking every day for 20 minutes on a treadmill made a great difference for me.
I also gave up fast food unless it was necessary.
Many doctors recommend the Mayo Clinic Heart Healthy Diet.
    Google it or http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/recipes
Libraries will likely have books on the Mayo Clinic Diet.

Organ foods like liver, foods with a lot of saturated fat like sausage, and foods with partially or fully hydrogenated oils elevate ldl and total cholesterol.

Sugary foods, starchy foods, and alcohol elevate triglicerides.

There are many more factors like genetics, physical activity, and weight that affect cholesterol. I found that doing a 30 minute daily cardio exercise like brisk walking and losing weight was most effective at lowering my total cholesterol.

Check out page 19 of the following website. It shows the maximum amounts of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol you should consume in a day.
