Ok. It's actually pretty simple! Let me try and help you.
Firstly, you need to figure out what your TDEE (Todal Daily Energy Expenditure) is. Here is a good calculator: http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/. Then you take that number, multiply it by .8. That is how many calories a day you should eat. You could also try and lose weight super duper fast and eat only 1500 calories a day (which is what I did and lost 10 pounds a month until I hit my goal weight).
Then you gotta figure out what to eat. What I found that works for me is finding foods that are the most bang for your buck, calorie wise. Sweet potatoes, chicken, fruit, and veggies are all filling and don't have TOO many calories. You need to make sure you measure everything you eat AND drink. Tablespoons, measuring cups, and a kitchen scale are all really important. You would be surprised how many calories are in a "regular" bowl of cereal.
Watch out for "hidden" calories. Salad dressing, sauces, and drinks like soda and juice are packed to the brim with calories.
Finally, you gotta start to move more. A lot of people had success with the couch to 5k program (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml) I never tried it, so I can't comment on how good it is, but I do love running, so there is that. You could supplement the couch to 5k program with some weight training. Going to the gym/buying free weights and doing some weight routines, or doing a body weight program (check this place out: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/). Work out no more than 6 days a week (that's what I have found personally). Your body needs a good rest day.
Finally, you gotta stay dedicated dude. Make sure you don't go over calories, keep your goals in mind, and work hard. There will be days you want to eat a **** ton of ice cream. There will be days you don't want to exercise. You gotta get past these feelings and make sure you do what you are supposed to do. But you totally can do it man.0
