when you lose weight,are you losing fat or muscles?

Im using this MFP for about 9 days in a row and now ive lost 5 pounds i guess and what im about to ask is.. is it my fat that goes away,or is it the water in my body or muscles or something else?

All of them. You loose muscle and fat, but with protein intake and proper weightlifting the muscle loss is almost zero. Also, many claim that it is possible to add little bit muscle while in deficit.1

Yes, you can gain muscle in a deficit [I've gained 0.5" of muscle on my arms so far] but it's very difficult and you have to keep those muscles stimulated. If you get lazy and stop working out those muscles, you will start losing them too.0
