Fast Food

Hey....I just heard there's someone who lost, like, 60 pounds eating at McDonald's. Is this true? I've been struggling and was wondering if this is an option.

I lose weight eating whatever I want.....in moderation.

Weight loss is all about eating less calories than you need. So, it doesn't matter where those calories come from. They can come from Twinkies, pizza, ice cream, etc. Or they can come from fruits, veggies, and lean meats. It doesn't matter.

Now, if you want to talk fitness performance and body composition and health, then you're going to have to talk about macros (carbs, proteins, fats) and such. However, that doesn't mean that fast food is off the table. There are plenty of sensible choices at fast food restaurants and it's certainly ok to have a not so sensible choice now and then.

I do best when I make sure that I'm getting the nutrition that my body needs, but not depriving myself of the treats that I want. So, if I'm planning for pizza on a Friday night, I have a salad with chicken for lunch, greek yogurt for breakfast, an apple for a snack, and make sure to have a protein shake for another snack. This way, I can have my pizza, but still get the protein and nutrients that my body needs. It's all about moderation and balance.

There are some great fast food options out there, if you know what you are looking for. McDonald's has all of its nutritional information available online. A Premium McWrap, Chicken & Ranch Grilled clocks in at 420 calories, 16g F, 41g C & 26g P. A Premium Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled chicken is 230 (pretty sure sans dressing.)

And do you feel like having a french fry? A small one with a ketchup packet is 240 calories. Add a Honey Mustard Grilled Snack Wrap and you have a 490 calorie meal.

Since McDonalds food is pretty standard looking, and I'd imagine that there isn't a lot of variety in preparation from franchise to franchise, the calorie counts are probably pretty accurate. Of course, if you're looking for organic/cage-free/grass-fed/chemical free stuff, then this clearly is not the way to go. But you can fit in your calories and your macros just fine.

McDonalds isn't all bad. I like their smoothies, a small is about 200 calories. The classic grilled chicken sandwich with only lettuce, side salad and a diet coke is less than 500 cals. And the egg white McMuffins are pretty comparable to the Jimmy Dean Delights around 200-300 calories each, with a coffee that's an OK breakfast. I wouldn't recommend eating it all the time but in a pinch or if you're on the road and that's the only thing around just browse the menu and find where and how you can cut calories. One week I had McDonalds then Wendy's then KFC 3 days in a row, I made it work and didn't go over my calories.

Very interesting I just watched the video on youtube. Not really a documentary so much as a bit of shameless self promotion but whatever. Boy's gotta eat right? =)

Well, now I'm hungry for McDonalds. Good job.

Looool. True enough. Given it is a counter argument to "Supersize Me" I think it fits quite well in the agenda stakes....

Last week I had a Big Tasty Burger meal and rocklea road shake!!

Difference is, I shared the burger with mum and left the shake half finished on the table, got a garden salad instead of fries and was horrified when I learned I'd half finished my coke without realising it wasn't diet!

Edit: I lost weight that week btw.
