Is my pill making me gain weight?

Wondering if anyone can give some advice or input..
Ive always had a 'dysfunctional period' (thats what the doctors call it). For as long as I can remember, Ive always had periods that last months. My doctors have put me on different birth controls (different pills and the depo shot) and they all work for a little while but then stop. Ive had loads of blood tests done, ultrasounds, internal ultrasounds, and they cant find anything.
So for the past 4 or so months, Ive had my period. My doctor switched my birth control hoping it would stop it but it didnt. So then she suggested taking 4 pills at once, then the next day 3, then 2, then 1 and that it should stop it.
I already took 4 then 3 and now Im gaining weight..is it because of all the hormones going on in my body?
Normally I have no problem losing weight while on my period.

I'm not sure anyone here can advise you over your medical team
I would certainly be looking for an expert / second opinion ..have you been referred to a specialist? Or is this all primary care?
I think the weight may well have to take second place to getting your medical issue sorted out

Has the weight gain been just over the last two days by taking essentially 7 pills, or over the course of 4 months?
If it is just the last two days, it is probably water weight due to the hormones going out of whack.
If it is over the course of 4 months, it could still be water weight, but it could be fat gain as well. Birth control increases appetite, which means you could be eating more than you realize. And some pills can cause it, some don't. Even if this isn't the case and you meant just in two days, it's something to keep an eye on.
I hope you find relief soon. I can't imagine having a period that long.1 -
I honestly don't know - certainly sounds possible that your hormones are all over the place and making you bloat -but I just wanted to give you my sincere sympathies on being on your period for over 4 months, as well as my heartfelt congratulations for retaining your sanity during this time and not ending up in prison, as I likely would have. I really hope your doctors figure this out and get you regulated!1

^^ this.....seriously you'd rather get advice off a forum than see a doctor.1 -
I am not a doctor nor would I even feel comfortable telling anyone that is under a doctors supervision what to do or not to do under this circumstance.
This sound really potentially dangerous and harmful and I would get to the doctors asap and while you are there discuss your weight questions as it pertains to the medication he/she puts you on.0 -
Have you seen a specialist? Losing all of that blood doesn't sound good for you, even though I'm told that its only a cup a period.
If you don't want more children or are past the age, you may want to consider laser ablation. They take an electrified "ball point pen" and scar the inside of your uterus so you don't have periods any more.0 -
Um no, its not that Id rather get advice from strangers. Im not asking for advice on WHY I have a dysfunctional period, Im just wondering if taking all this birth control is making me gain weight. I started it 2 days ago and have gained 1.5 pounds (yes I know its not a lot or a big deal but Ive been steadily going down and just wondering if all the hormones have to do with this little gain)
Again, Im not asking for advice about my period. I have seen 4 doctors who cant give me any actual answers. Its frustrating. Ive been dealing with this since I was like 14 years old.2 -
Thank you for those with kind words by the way! Im debating trying an IUD, but Ive heard both good and bad things.0

Im only 23 and do want children. My doctor did suggest that has a very last means action because Im so young and she doesnt normally do it on women my age.0 -
Again, sorry if people are confused about my post.
I am NOT asking for advice on how to stop my period or why my period is lasting this long or anything along those lines.
I am wondering if taking all this birth control is maybe making me gain.
I am doing what my doctor says to do, so I dont need advice on anything related to that.0 -

Perhaps a medical professional that studied women's reproductive issues?0 -

I feel for you, menopause and a hysterectomy have made it near impossible for me to lose weight. I am talking to my doctor in September, I am going to show him my diary and exercise and the fact that I am mostly plant based. There may be something else going on, talk to your doctor.0
-
I would almost bet it is water weight fluctuation
Hope that helps reassure
And good luck ...I hope you eventually get s regular cycle...it must be draining0 -
Count me as another vote to see a specialist.
I have extremely heavy periods, but fortunately Niagara Falls is just for 48 hours, and I am aware of the cause - my ginormous fibroids.0 -

Im sorry youre having problems losing weight because of that ive seen 4 different doctors and a specialist and no one can give me answer other than my period is just dysfunctional. I really dont want to do anything though that would cause me to be unable to bear children because Im so young. I hope you get answers!0 -

Thank you! It definitely is. Even though its been going on for so long its still emotionally and physically draining. I think this little gain is just from water and the extra hormones.0 -

I have seen numerous doctors and specialists and have had so many tests done and no one can give me an actual answer. They all justsay I need to find the right balance in my birth control to regulate it.0 -
another opinion... you are so young... but weight loss, weight gain, stress are always contributing factors at any age prior to menopause for irregular and bizarre periods. you may have issues with your iron as well considering you are bleeding so much.. make sure you get your blood levels checked for anemia0

^^^ this..
Could not possibly gain 1.5 pounds of fat in this short of time. Water retention based on the medication is possible, can also be diet related, hydration, sodium intake, def fluctuating hormones, carb consumption, etc.. so its really hard to say.. Its likely..
I would still talk to the doctor about side affects of any medication he/she puts you on. This would def ease your mind rather than us guessing..

I gained 60+lbs in under 2 months after being on the depo shot.
I over ovulate and only have 1 ovary. I had positive experiences with ortho tricylin-lo helping me losing weight. I didn't experience any weight gain with the patch or implant. Hormones are a funky thing and it can definitely cause weight retention. I would suggest an endocrinologist if you aren't already seeing one.
I have a 3 week period with 2-5 days of rest in between so my weight lately has been flopping like a fish out of water.. I will be up 9lbs in ONE day and hold it for two.. then lose 10.5 pounds on day 3.0
