How much protein should you get a day?

I've been eating chicken recently, so is there a limit or is more or less better or some where in between, I'm just asking because I don't want to veer off what I've been doing by over eating.

Any advice welcome, just curious

it really depends on what your goals are thru this process... if you want lean body mass more is better - most of the really active peeps suggest .8 - 1 gram per pound of lean body mass (the government RDA is less than that). I personally aim for around 150 grams of protein a day and sometimes get way more than that.

You will only over eat if you eat over your calories each day keeping you out of a calorie deficit. You can do this with any food.

Protein setup in MFP is certainly fine to use that macro number. If you have a specific goal targeted (like exercise) in which you want to up protein you can certainly change MFP macro percentage and eat the protein you need from any source of meat including meats like chicken, beef, pork, turkey, eggs, cheese, greek yogurt, fish, protein supplements (shakes), etc..

edited to add: knowing what I know now, eating ample protein while in a calorie deficit to me is essential to maintaining muscle mass whilst eating at a deficit. If you choose to want to up protein based on this fact, change your percentage to allow at least .8 grams / body weight.

The above poster says lean mass, but this RDA recommendation is low for weight loss!

    And yes this as well!

Great responses. All depends on your goals like stated above. Are you more focused on how your body looks (body composition) OR how it performs? (Athletes)
Different goals require different energy needs.

I'm aiming for 1.6g /kg body weight because I read (on suppversity) this can help prevent muscle loss - for me this is around 113g a day. I have heard too much can cause digestive issues but not personally. I try to keep this within my calorie limit.

I have mine set to 30% and try not to get less than 100g per day at a minimum.

The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake)=56 grams per day for the average sedentary man. 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman.
I keep 46 as my absolute minimum with a target of 70 grams a day.

You'll know when you're pulling in too much. When your kidneys start having to filter out excess proteins that your body isn't using, your pee will turn cloudy and foamy. If you start seeing that, cut it back some. Whenever it happens to me, usually within 24 hours of reducing intake, it's gone back to normal.

Depends on a lot of things. I get about 60g more or less. No issues.
