water weight vs. fat loss?

Hey MFP'ers, I've been lurking for a few months and have had a question that I was curious about. When does the honeymoon phase of water weight loss end and the "real" weight loss begin? I may be asking way too vague of a question.

I know that I'm very prone to water weight gain when I'm higher then usual on sodium, at first it really bummed me out when I'd reverse the weight loss with a few pound gain until I looked back and saw my previous sodium intake. Pretty cool once I figured it out.

So I guess I'm just curious to hear when my hard work is actually working for me and if I need to step it up further. My last 5 pounds has been a ton more challenging then the previous 20!

Thanks for your help.

You can lose fat and water at the same time. The first week is typically a large water loss, but by the second or third week it's almost all fat loss (unless your diet is crap and you don't lift, in which case you'll be losing a good amount of muscle as well). In some cases you can still be losing a lot of water for the first month.
