August total to date – 152.11

Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Survive last month before retirement. Train as well as possible toward Rochester Marathon. Avoid putting myself back on the couch.

Today's notes – Monday's assignment was easy + 4 strides. I knew right where I would run, and it would come out to about 6.5 miles. I got home a bit late, but I had time . . . and couldn't make myself go out and run. I felt a need for sleep, I had stuff I needed to do that required me to be sedentary, and I just took a rest/mental health day in spite of the plan calling for me to run.

This morning I got up and felt great. The rest day on Monday turned out to be a Good Thing. Today's assignment was 10 x Yasso 800s. Did a 2 mile warmup on the roads, nothing special, and set out to run 10 x 800m at a target time of 3:15 with same time recovery. Some runners take the recovery time as standing around or gentle walking; for Yassos I take it as a slow jog. I did make the concession of stopping long enough for a sip or two of Nuun during some of the recovery intervals. Because I'm moving, some of the recovery intervals were a few seconds longer than the preceding speed interval to put me at a marked point on the track when I started the next 800.

Anyway, my pace control wasn't the best. The first 800 was way too fast, but it more or less leveled out by the 4th one. As compared to a target of 3:15, the 800s came in at 3:04, 3:06, 3:07, 3:09, 3:12, 3:09, 3:10, 3:11, 3:10, and 3:10. Supposedly this means I'm in shape to run a 3:10 or 3:12 marathon. I don't think so. The goal is to run a well-managed marathon, finishing in good shape at whatever time that gives me. Between 3:25 and 3:30 would be acceptable. Below 3:20 and finishing in good shape would be beyond my expectations.

Anyway, the Yasso's were on a flat, smooth track at 79º F (26º C) and reasonable humidity. This is the first time I"ve run Yasso's on a 400m track; they were a lot less mentally challenging than the Yasso's I ran on a 200m indoor track last winter. It's possible that I'm mentally tougher now than I was then; certainly the outdoor track is a nicer running environment than the indoor track.

Stayed indoors and just did 8 miles on the treadmill tonight as it was still 88 degrees and thunderstorming outside at 9PM. Kept it at a moderate 8:40 pace, as my garmin plan wanted me doing 5-1K repeats at 10K pace, but with a long (100+) mile ride planned for tomorrow morning, with some faster riding with my team in the middle 35 miles, I didn't want to burn myself out.

    8/2 - 11 miles (w. 2 at MP)
    8/3 - 4 miles (w. 2 miles near threshold HR)
    8/5 - 12 miles
    8/6 - 11 miles
    8/7 - 20 miles
    8/8 - 7 miles (w. 6 at MP)
    8/9 - 11.5 miles
    8/11 - 10 miles
    8/12 - 20 miles (last 5 at MP)
    8/13 - 2 miles
    8/14 - 6 miles
    8/15 - 10 miles
    8/16 - 9 miles
    8/17 - 3 miles
    8/18 - 6.5 miles (w. 5x1K repeats at HM pace)
    8/21 - 15 miles (w. final 5 miles @ 8 pace)
    8/22 - 7 miles
    8/23 - 8 miles

    Total: 173 miles, 5 session with MP/threshold HR/speedwork running
Goal: 200 miles, 8 faster sessions
Remaining; 27 miles, 3 faster sessions

    2016 Race Schedule:
    Disney Marathon - Jan 6 - 3:29:09
    Gasparilla 15K - Feb 20 - 1:01:59
    Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51
    Pittsburgh Marathon - May 1 - 3:08:25
    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25
    Chicago Marathon - Oct 9
    Ironman Florida - Nov 5
    Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas 10K - Nov 13

@ddmom0811 - I've given up on saving a few pieces of furniture/etc from post-run sweat stains as I just need somewhere to stretch certain muscles, and the floor just doesn't cut it for some positions. Most of the stuff I sit on/lay in is in my bedroom, so I'm the primary user. RE biking at very fast speeds, there is a rotating paceline formation (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S129pCsN-YU - in short everybody goes in a 2-across loop with short times at the front), but for my Friday team ride, there are usually about 8 of us, and do 6-8 mile stretches at a time before looping/regrouping, so even with 30-45 second pulls, everybody only needs to pull twice per segment and some of the stronger cyclists will do a full mile in a two minute pull.

    @virkati - Usually I've saved about 1 min/lb lost by Half Marathon, so my first HM (2/14) was 2:29 @ 230LB, second (7/14) was 2:09 @ 205lb, third (11/14) and forth (2/15) was 1:47 @ 180lb, fifth (11/15) was 1:32 @ 170lb, and I did a 1:32 marathon 2nd half split in May @ 162lb.

@instantmartian - I am also sorry about the loss of your mom and your grandmother! My dad also got very sick before he and my stepmom could do any of their planned retirement traveling. That is why I told my husband when he retires, I retire even though he is 10 years older than me.
@ereck44 - my husband doesn't get my running at all but after going to a few races with me and hearing the nice comments from our friends, he is much more supportive.
@HonuNui - as always I love your pictures!
@Elise4270 - hope all goes well with your doctor visit tomorrow!

    @orphia -Beautiful sunrise!
@kristinegift - Congrats on Thesis! I'm SO jealous of that temperature. It was 81 with 90% humidity this morning and it was miserable for me.
@ohhim - I saw that kind of riding on the Tour de France last year with one of the teams and it looked so cool. I can't imagine my group doing it, but the faster groups in my club do something like that.

So darn hot this morning. I woke up a little late so could only get in 4 miles. Tonight is back to school night - when the parents come to meet the teachers. Not my favorite night of the year. :smirk:

    8/1 - 5.1 miles
    8/2 - 4.6 miles with intervals
    8/3 - 4.6 miles + Strength Training
    8/4 - 5.67 miles
    8/5 - 5.1 miles + Strength Training
    8/6 - 43 miles biking
    8/7 - 30 miles biking
    8/8 - 3.1 miles
    8/9 - 18 miles biking
    8/10 - strength training
    8/11 - 5.2 miles
    8/12 - 5.3 miles + strength training
    8/13 - 44 miles biking
    8/14 - 44 miles biking

@instantmartian It does sound like those tickets were a gift from your mother!
    I 100% agree!

@instantmartian We've made it into a mini heat wave down in the south east for 3 day temps going over 80F (yes I had to google the conversion from celsius).

Well done on the tickets, persistence really does pay off the play has had such good reviews I'm sure everyone will love it. Sounds like you've got an amazing trip for you and the family planned for when you come over and its all worked out really well. Lets hope the sunshine stays for you :)
Thank you! I am super excited, and it should be a great little trip. You know, I could have estimated the Celsius temps when I was writing my last reply. I lived in Australia for 6 months in college, so I got pretty good at quickly figuring out a ballpark conversion, but that conversion really is a giant pain in the rear!

@instantmartian it's funny when you hear about someone who hasn't read or seen HP. I started to read the books when a friend's middle school aged daughter recommended it. We were at a Christmas party and she was telling me all about this book, then she said do you want to read it. Well I didn't want to hurt her feelings, thinking hello she's 11 and I'm well older. So I said sure. Her Mom brought me the book and I finished it in one night. I was hooked from there. We have them all at home, but like you Skip is forced to read so much in school she has no desire to read outside of school.
That sounds much like how my Dad got into it. My grandmother bought my brother the first book when he was about 11 hoping it would get him to read. It sat at my parents' house, unread, for a couple of years until my dad saw the first movie, loved it, and decided to take the book with him on a business trip. He came home, bought the other two or three books, and has pre-ordered all the books and movies since. It's too funny! One day, I'll read the rest of the series. I have so many books on my list of those to read, plus I joined a book club about a year and a half ago, so I have that monthly book to read, as well. I hope Skip finds a love for reading after it is no longer an obligation. It's sad that school turns reading into a chore.

@instantmartian ...I feel so sad reading about your mom passing at age 58 from pancreatic cancer....it reminded me of my parents who always talked about traveling but didn't do as much as they wanted due to my dad starting to have health problems. (I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books or seen the movies either...I am lucky to have the time to read books...usually can read an article in a magazine.)
I'm so sorry to hear of your father's failing health. It's never easy watching grandparents or parents age and/or deal with health issues. If you ever get a chance, seriously watch the movies or read the books. They are quite good!

I think that is an absolutely wonderful idea! Thankfully, Mom was able to retire at the age of 55, and she did get to do some of things she enjoyed without the stress of work for a few years. My parents retired around the same time. My dad waited about 6 months after Mom to retire, but that's because my mom changed her retirement date from June to the December before, and Dad already told work he was leaving in June. Dad retired at 61; Mom retired at 55.

@Orphia: What a beautiful photo! This just reminds me of why I need to go back to Australia and/or figure out how to permanently reside there.

@kristinegift: Congratulations on turning in your thesis!! I cannot even imagine how exciting that is for you. I was not required to do a thesis for my masters, but I have a good friend who had to do one for her doctorate, and I completely understand the stress and anxiety it can cause. I bet you are so darned relieved! Good luck with your defense!

Last night's run was not a good one. I cut it a bit short because my hamstring was nagging at me the entire time. I am planning a tempo for this evening, but if the hammie is still feeling hung up, I might just give it a rest day. I haven't had one in over a week because Monday is usually my rest day but the weather was so darn nice I couldn't resist and I swapped Monday for Sunday last week due to traveling. Maybe my body is trying to tell me something.

Got in only two miles running and one mile walking today because I am still adjusting to the early hour. So little energy. Note to self: CAFFEINE.

Edit: I also got a really nasty side stitch this time around. I can never figure out how to make those things go away.

Last nights run kept getting pushed further and further back due to some unexpected car issues with my wife's van and several PT appointments with our kids. I had a huge project at work that had to get finished so i headed back to the office after the kids went to bed and finally hit the gym at a little before 10 PM. I needed a good stress buster run so I just just put the earphones on and set the treadmill to 7 MPH and worked it out. I actually felt great after that run, I typically do not like to run that fast too often since I'm old and fat and I pay for it for a few days. Fortunately this morning when I got up I felt better than I have in a long time. I got a few miles easy warmup then hit the 6x600 VO2Max intervals with the kids at XC Practice. I actually marked the course a tad short since i was running a bit behind and i guesstimated the turn around for the workout a few weeks ago. I ended up being .33 miles or about 535 meters according to my garmin lap times. Did my 6 at the following paces - 6:40/7:15/6:57/7:12/6:56/7:08. After looking at my max HR for each interval (178/177/183/182/186/185) I realized I probably had quite a bit left in the tank. I probably should be trying to get to 190-195. Followed up with another few miles of cooldown. Hopefully I can get my 14 miler in tomorrow on really tired legs.

On a side note, is there a way in Strava to have it bring in the lap times from Garmin, or does it just do mile splits. Also Garmin has the 1st part of the morning run at 6.67 Miles, where Strava has it at 6.9. Also is there a way to edit the mileage in Strava for when I run on a treadmill. I'm always .1 mile short each mile from the treadmill to the watch. I like the social aspect of Strava but not sure how well I like the rest of it. I doubt I'll ever stop using Garmin Connect to use Strava exclusively.
