I was diagnosed pre diabetic at age 18 weighing 285 pounds, height 5'3. It was a complete eye opener for me. Staying physically active was not the "norm" in my family. Our Mexican American culture is known for the variation of foods, and family gatherings. Witnessing my grandparents undergo dialysis was traumatic. I decided to take on the world and make a 360 degree lifestyle change! It was not easy, I can tell you that many times I cried because I felt like I couldn't breath but I didn't stop. I kept going! I started my fitness journey inside my bedroom because I was too embarrassed to workout in public. In the course of 3 months I lost around 60 pounds that first summer. All in my bedroom doing random workout videos like "Billy Boot Camp." One session of a workout video was about 45 minutes and I couldn't go past 10 minutes without needed a breather. I couldn't do one push up. I started from the very bottom. When I decided to workout in public, I went to the high school running track. I remember that 4 laps was equal to 1 mile. It took me half a year to jog 1 mile. It was a slow and steady pace. I would play psychological games with myself. Keep in mind, I did this by myself without a trainer, without a friend motivating me, no body. You can do it too. I would set my mind to a certain hash mark or tree, or rock, or fence, etc. and I would tell myself that I will not stop running until I met my goal and once I was there I would push myself a little further. Everything was in my head. Eventually I gained so much endurance, I could run 15 miles none stop all in the first 3 years. It was then when I decided to incorporate weights since I needed to tone up my body. You can do it too! Add me for motivation! Let's do this together! Create a life you love!
