Do I need another device to use UA Record to track steps or am I missing something in the settings?0

It depends on the model of iPhone that you have. The 5s and above have a built in accelerometer so the steps track in the Apple 'health' app. You can link it to your mfp account. You can also link it to a Fitbit account if you have one or care to set one up.1
