Worried about exercise and water retention

I know I know. Its a stupid thing to worry about, but I really look forward to seeing that number on the scale every week and I'm not looking forward to the idea of starting my gym membership and possibly seeing a stall on the scale.
Is water retention a sure thing when I start lifting weights? It won't stop me, it just really sucks putting in work and seeing the scale stay the same. Would like to hear from people and their experiences when it comes to this.

If you're brand new to lifting, then yes. You're creating new tears in your muscles and the water is there to help repair them. But there are other factors that will make you retain/gain water weight (sodium, hormones, stress).
