Gym newbie, what do I start out with?

I am female, 19, 5'5", 180 lbs
I've changed my eating habits for the better for the past two months and have stuck with it but now I feel I'm ready for the gym.

I begin college in September and they have a free full weight and cardio gym as well as a pool! So since its free I want to take advantage of that and start working out but the problem is I've never been to a gym before...
I completely lack any muscle, I'm extremely weak I would love to get a bit stronger as well as take off the pounds, does anyone know what I should start out with and what the terminology is because I am completely lost and don't want to be the idiotic fat chick that has no idea what she's doing. How long should I go to the gym and how often? Anything I should focus on mainly? Also would it be better to workout before or after class?

Do you know if the gym will be staffed? I belong to the ymca and they offer a orientation to show new comers how to work the various machines. If there's no staff, I'd head for an easy piece of equipment, like a treadmill and just soak in all that's going on around me. You can figure out some basics just by watching. Or find a gym buddy. There's bound to be some other girls in our dorm who will want to go. Your gym schedule will probably depend on your class schedule. The ideal is some cardio and some weights, but really any workout you like and can stick to is the best. Good luck! College was just such a great time for me! I hope it's the same for you. Enjoy every moment of it!
