Daily Calories...

When you guys track your foods, are you more concerned about reaching at least 1200 in your FOOD category or reaching that in your NET category? It just seems impossible to get that high some days.... I go on hikes that can sometimes last 3-4 hours, and those burn more calories than I am allowed in a day! I don't want to force myself to eat just to reach 1200 in my NET calories. Any help on this would be fantastic!

I eat around 3000 calories and some days I'm starving, so I'm not going to be much help. Try eating calorie dense foods like nuts, avocado, or anything that use to add weight in the old days.

If you know you're going to be burning more calories than you normally eat try upping the calories per meal. Little things can add up. If you cook with olive oil or butter, add cheese, nuts, dried fruit, salad dressings, trail mix, granola, full fat dairy products, avocados, a less lean cut of meat if you eat meat, don't use diet products, lite, or non-fat especially on huge burn days.

    Are you kidding?

Just search for calorie dense foods on your browser

a handful of nuts, seeds, hell even fruit will get you there....see what a cup of pine nuts will do.

If you find it difficult to net 1200 cals you either are not trying or trying to hard in the wrong way.

Look at these if you are questioning your net cals

I have never net 1200...but I eat a lot! Granola bars, fruit, dairy.... Some of my days, though, I have cardio burns that are up over 2000 and my daily goal is 1370. I can't even imagine eating that much! I do have odd work hours, which causes me to not eat at regular times...that's probably the biggest reason I don't get high cals...I don't know!!

As long you eat at least 1/2 to 2/3 of your exercise cals you should be alright as a lot of burns are overestimates but research calorie dense foods. It isn't that difficult if you plan a little.

Also protein shakes with berries, banana, seeds etc one in the morning should hit around 600 cals straight up.

    Good luck

ps after exercise my calorie intake is about 3000-4000 cals

That was another thing I was having issues with...the protein. I'm vegetarian, so I don't get too much 'natural' protein, but I have no idea which kind to buy. I heard some have a small amount of protein and a lot of filler, some make you gassy, some just taste like chalk.... Any suggestions from you?? I've heard GNC may have a decent one....

The one I use is called Sunwarrior Protein Raw Vegan Vanilla

Taste good but helps to add fruit and ice to the milk and blend well.

Also marinated tofu tends to be fairly high in calories because of the marinade.

would also recommend Primal Strips - Meatless Vegan Jerky Soy - Texas Bbq...high in protein small in volume.

These products can be ordered on line or found at health food stores.

Keep in mind, mfp and other online estimates of calories burned are... vastly off in many cases, a heart rate monitor will put them closer to the ball park but can still be pretty far off as well, but you really shouldn't fall less than eating back 50% of your fitness calories at a minimum (if you're using tdee you shouldn't be eating them back at all, they're already accounted for.)

Greek Yogurt is your friend, get packets of hidden valley ranch/harvest dill dip and you've got a great dip for lots of things... it's fairly low calorie but very high in protein compared to most other yogurts. So long as you're not vegan it works well. Hummus is also your friend... high calorie and high protein. Good stuff.
