Breastfeeders!:do you count breastfeeding as an exercise only when it's during the day.?

I've recently learned to calculate about how many calories I burn with each breastfeeding session. I've often heard that if you're nursing, you'll need an extra 500 calories a day to replace the ones burned while feeding. My question is: is that referring to a 24 hour period or just during the day when we're awake and active. (my calories burned are beyond 500 so I'd like to make sure I'm completing my logs correctly) Thanks!

That's 500 calories in a 24 hour period.1

To clarify, MFP only rates breastfeeding as an exercise to make it easy to log those "calories out" in a calories in-calories out equation. The majority of calories are actually those that are in the breast milk itself (plus some used by your body to make the breast milk) so this is completely irrespective of the time of day and how active you are.1
