Garmin adjustment

Ok so maybe I'm a dummy but Can someone tell me why I'm in the red on my diary at the end of the day - Garmin figures my steps and adds them into my day and seems to deduct my other exercise. I would think if I have a high number of steps that would give me more of a budge room - my steps are still exercise and I'm still burning calories. There's not a double up on the workouts I do.
Does that make sense ?
