Heard a lot of good things about coconut oil generally but recently came across a number ofarticles that claim that coconut oil post workout almost mimics the idea of whey protein and helps replenish insulin stores. Has anyone tried it?

I use it as a moisturizer after my bath and it works well for that.

Erm, no, not at all. Coconut oil is pure fat, and invokes no insulin response at all.
However, I will add it to whey protein shakes, because keto, and I need it to keep my macros balanced when putting in 25g of straight protein at once.

ETA: if you get an insulin response from your coconut oil, that *kitten* has been adulterated, or cross-contaminated, and should probably be tossed, especially if it did that when fresh.

Fat =/= protein. Personally, post workout coconut oil would likely make me yak, but go ahead and give it a go. Report back.

All I found was a bunch of "I read online" posts, kind of like this one. The actual study that I believe most of these are referring to is this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1245892 which used straight MCTs, not coconut oil. However, it was of course done on rats, and done via gavaging, though that last part shouldn't affect much.

So you'd rather gulp down coconut oil rather than whey?

My other problem with that abstract, is that it doesn't state what the insulin response level was, only that it was higher than corn oil's zero. We could be talking levels so low that licking your finger after dipping it in a tub of whey would cause a higher response.

One thing to keep in mind, your protein shake needs to be close to room temp when you do this. Adding the oil to a cold liquid causes it to chunk up and just stick to the inside of your container, even when using a blender. Learned this the hard way, and ended up scraping the inside of my mixer with a spoon.

I don't know about post workout, but if you want some quick release energy pre workout, go for MCT oil. I can't see coconut oil doing anything for you, but that's just my opinion, who knows. You should try it and see, it wont hurt anything.

Carton of fruit juice would be quicker at restoring glycogen

Protein intake has no specific timing requirement for the vast majority of humanity (eg non-professionals)

The way people like to obfuscate with minutiae is endlessly fascinating

Yeap. I know it's going to be different for everyone, but last I heard, we're talking at least 6 good years of hard consistent training before one has to start even remotely caring about nutrient timing.
